Schedule of Activities

Thursday, June 20th

Diaspora members, local partners, and community residents will join together to beautify the park in the community. We will plant grass and a tree to commemorate the day. We also want to provide some outdoor benches so the residents can have a beautiful, safe, and relaxing space to hang out. Plans will be made for the ongoing maintenance of the space.

10:00 - 11:30: Dela Vega Park Project

We will be led by special tour guides through this amazing community. We will make scheduled stops along the way to interact with the top dressmaker, the shoemaker, and other artisans in the community. This promises to be a fun time. Dela Vegans are not stodgy, disengaged people. They are captivating, friendly, funny, yet very serious and committed to their community. They are just coming out of an amazing 2019 Sports Day experience, so expect bantering and much camaraderie as you walk through the four blocks in the community.

11:45 - 1:00: Community Walk-through

1:00 - 2:30: Lunch & Discussion

Lunch will be prepared and provided onsite. This is not a segment you will want to miss. :)

Friday, June 21st

We are making a long-term commitment to community development in Jamaica. We believe that Dela Vega is the right community to test an emerging model of diaspora engagement in sustainable community development. The community benefits from having an excellent leadership team and a robust diaspora community.

10:00 - 12:00: Stakeholder Meetup

12:00 - 1:00: Lunch

1:00 - 2:30: Domino Tournament

Lunch will again be prepared and provided onsite.

We will end our Diaspora/Dela experience on a high note with a domino tournament.

The Beginning of a Journey

This initiative was birthed out of the Northeast region of the Jamaica Diaspora Organization.

The 2019 Diaspora Day of Service will introduce diaspora members to Dela Vega City in Spanish Town and kick-off the the Community of Special Promise initiative. We are making a long-term commitment to sustainable development in this community. Jamaicans and all friends of Jamaica, wherever they are located, are being invited to join us on this thoughtful and exciting journey. Dela Vega City has been selected to serve as the platform for the design and testing of a sustainable community development model that can be replicated in other communities across Jamaica. Though there will be robust diaspora support, the change initiative will be community-driven, with the Dela Vega City Benevolent Society playing the critical community-based leadership role.

In lieu of just moving ahead to engage somewhat arbitrarily in a variety of social intervention programs , we are forming a cross-sector coalition comprised of individuals and organizations, both local and in the diaspora. The coalition will provide the expertise and the direction needed to ensure that this initiative is carried out with excellence. Though the coalition will remain engaged over the long haul, we envision many other short- and mid-term collaborations with a variety of other individuals and organizations.

We will use available platforms to engage not only the many Jamaicans in the diaspora who have remained connected to their roots, but we will also make every effort to energize and even excite members of the diaspora who have, for one reason or another, remained disengaged or even disillusioned with Jamaica for many years. The ultimate goal is the development of a dynamic cross-sector diaspora-supported, community-driven model of sustainable community development that garners deep support from local and diaspora organizations, agencies, and individuals so that together we can impact the social, economic, and spiritual fabric of Jamaica as a whole. Dela Vega City is just the beginning.

Want to join us? Click here to contact us if you would like to get more information on this initiative. You can also RSVP to participate in the Diaspora Days of Service in Dela Vega City. We will be in the community on June 20th and June 21st, 2019.

A Special Note

Our goal is to support an authentic grassroots community-driven sustainable community development agenda across Jamaica, beginning in Dela Vega City, Spanish Town. We envision a robust and growing coalition that is committed to developing a model of diaspora engagement in sustainable community development in Jamaica.

Day of Service Home Page

Community development generally means a planned evolution of all aspects of community well-being and improvements in the quality of life of the community. It is a process whereby community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to community common problems.
